This Westlake property had a nice front yard that we added native deer resistant plantings to in the spring. That summer the clients asked for a from scratch backyard makeover!
This large estate was transformed in 2021 with limestone retaining walls, walkways, and a patio space with bench seating. The flagstone patio sits at the base of a 25' naturalized stream feature . The above gutters were tied into and routed under the earth to carry rainwater into the self recycling water feature.
A diversity of native ornamental trees, fruiting trees, flowering perennials, bunch grasses, succulents, and zoysia pallisades were used to create an ecosystem around the yard and stream feature. Which serves as clean drinking and bathing water for many nearby animal visitors.
This stream feature was installed by Focal Point Features and won best pondless water feature artisan of the year in 2022. The location of this water feature was designed by simply observing the natural environment. The drainage path in this very sloped backyard, which was nothing but dirt, all gravitated toward a central crevice. This natural path led us to cascading between two large live oak trees!
This gorgeous rolling property was enhanced with drainage aesthetics, native perennial and evergreen plantings, custom limestone steps, a custom trellis, a/c privacy fencing. A multi-color flagstone walkway that ties into the existing patioscape, with a pathway connection to the fenced in veggie beds. The backyard plant selections were shade and deer tolerant with an integrated dry creek bed. The front yard plant selections were full sun and deer resistant. This beautiful pond feature is also serviced and maintained by Focal Point Features.
This edible medicinal garden was designed for the Austin Permaculture Guild and installed by Austin Greenscapes. A chopped limestone medicine wheel garden was installed for strolling around the garden and as a functional flow path for accessing the plants. Two areas received new pathways with gravel for functional drainage and access. A combination of herbs, flowering perennials, fruiting shrubs and trees, and native evergreens were used to create this bio-diverse pollinator haven.

This edible food forest map was designed for Helping Hands Home of Austin. Helping Hands Home of Austin serves young adults who have aged out of foster care. The students and residents there participate in the garden maintenance and planting for the exisiting areas. They planned to implement the design on their own by phasing it over time.
This design was centered around the client's challenges with drainage and a deep desire to cultivate a native perennial garden that she could work in and enjoy. After investigating the topography of the area, I found that their house sat at the bottom of a ridge in their neighborhood. Water was first captured in the front yard rain garden that collects water at two key points. Retaining walls were built in the back of the house to buttress and support the home. While providing a beautfiul bench seating area, terraced walkways, and cedar deck that is covered by a cedar pergola.
